Hopkins District Library Board Meeting Minutes

June 12, 2012

Present: Suzanne Antvelink, Natalie Bazan, Karon Dunifin, Mimi Gabriel, Anita Kerber, David Klink, Chris Navis, Barbara Wrobleski


1. Meeting was called to order at 7:00 PM.

5. Treasurer's Report

     Reviewed report. Currently have spent about 42% of budget, while 50% through the year.  Lawyer expenses have been highter than expected.  Report approved as written.

8. Director's Report

- Programs

    - Fiber group meeting 3rd Monday of the month, includes knitting, crocheting, felting.

    - Book club meeting regularly.

    - Coups for Troops (coupon clippers) meeting here.

    - Game night 1st Monday of every month, putting this in summer reading program.

    - Computer Refresher and Facebook overview last month.

    - Etsy/Pintrest Overview and computer basics planned for June.

   - LoC books are mostly out, only a few are still at cataloging.

   - Secret project.

   - Arts Alive - voting began June 1st, will continue until September 14.  Votes are $1 each.

   - Logo contest ended May 31, board voted on submessions.

   - Summer Reading Club.

- Publicity

    - Globe stories, GR Press, TV 13, included yarn bombing & millage.

    - Up to 49 "likes" on Facebook.

   - 20 members of the "friends" group.

   - Just joined "four square".

    - Interview on channel 13.

    - Story in the Grand Rapids Press.

    - Article in the Allegan County News.

    - Millage lanugage finished and distributed.

- Meetings, workshops, etc.

    - MeL database webinares.

    - Attending Monterey and Watson township meetings in June.

- Building Issues

   - Agreed to not hire consultant for requesting USF funds.

   - Broken door and toilet.

   - Need changing table for bathroom.

- Budget Issues

   - None

- Library Closing

     - Memorial Day weekend (Saturday and Monday)

- Volunteers

     - 20+ people have signed up for the Friends of the Library group.  Met june 2nd.

     - Donations of books still arriving.

     - Might have National Honor Society students haleping iwth Summer Reading Program.

     - 4th of July events

- Lakeland, State, other library news

     - none

- Patron comments and suggestions

     - Summer reading club suggestions

- Other

     - Cookbook finished and just awaiting new logo

     - Still looking for more recipes for next year's cookbooks.

     - Getting quotes for a building repair grant and new bike rack out front, paid for by DDA.

     - Circulation stats continuing to rise.

     - Plans for next year's secret project are in the works.

    - Still working on the Book of Hopkins.

    - Received $500 grant from Walmart.

    - None

10. New Business

   - Approved adding a clause to the policy manual under hiring: "New staff (hired after the creation of the district library) will be subject to background checks as part of the hiring process."

     - Allegan County Equalization Department required Millage Request from to be signed by Board President & Secretary.

    - Discussed preformance evaluation to be given in October for Natalie.
